Becoming Independent: The Saturday Rituals of Boarding School Life

It’s Saturday morning. I am in Senior Secondary School. The school is a boarding school.

Going to boarding school has been a life-changing experience. I now have to take care of myself.

Today, I am washing my clothes. I get the bucket and some soap. I start washing my clothes.

After washing I rinse them.

I want to get them onto the drying lines except the drying lines are full. Everybody is washing their clothes on Saturday. I have no option but to dry them on the green grass.

I am sitting next to my clothes on the green grass. If I go anywhere else, I will come back with a school shirt or shorts stolen.

So washing and drying my clothes at the Senior Secondary school is a 4-hour ritual on Saturdays.
