Rice, Beans, and Unexpected Protein: A Boarding School Adventure

It’s 1995. I am at Mfantsipim School. It is a boarding house school situated in Cape Coast.

It’s Thursday afternoon. I am reluctant to go to the dining hall. It is Rice and Beans stew. I am hungry. I can’t help it.

I am in the dining hall. We are sitting on a big table. The food is served at the head of the table. My meal is passed to me. I start eating. I see something funny inside the beans. It looks like worms or maggots.

I tap a friend, “Look at what is inside my food”. He replies, “It is cooked. It is protein. Have some”.

Are you not hungry?

I reply, “I am”. So I get right to the task at hand.
