Chocolate Bribery: Tackling Malaria Treatment with Sweet Solutions

My nephews are visiting their cousins. Joshua develops a fever. I take him to the hospital. He is diagnosed with Malaria. This is where the problem begins. Joshua is 4 years old.

Malaria medication has been bitter ever since I was a child in the 1980s.

For those that know – think Malarex. It is one of the most nauseating medications on earth. You almost feel like vomiting when the bottle is opened.

it’s 2015, Malaria medicine is in the form of tablets – Yellow tablets. Still extremely nauseating and bitter. At least this time you can quickly throw it down your throat and get done with it.

To make Joshua take the medication, I get a bar of chocolate. One tablet per chocolate bar.

Joshua accepts the deal. we are doing well. we are almost done.

Now Kevin – Joshua’s younger brother – was some chocolate. So he asks,” Uncle, can I have some yellow medicine?”

I reply, “No, you can’t. But you can have some chocolate”
