Childhood Illusions: When Closing Eyes Couldn’t Stop the World

I am in Class 1. I am becoming a little more conscious of myself. When I feel like it, I close my eyes. I do this because I believe the world goes dark when I do so. I am always happy with my results. I can stop the world when I want to.

It’s Monday morning. I get to school and I don’t have my homework with me. I get to class. My plan is simple. When the teacher asks for it, I simply close my eyes. The world should stop, right?

The world doesn’t stop.

I am told to go and kneel. Kneeling down, I close my eyes. The world still doesn’t stop. I am in pain.

The teacher comes back with a cane to lash all of us.

I close my eyes again. The world doesn’t stop. I am lashed.

It’s clear now. I should keep my eyes open.

Life is relentlessly moving forward.
